Sheherazade
July 4 - August 18, 2018

The following text was written by Julie Leidner for the exhibition by Keith Allyn Spencer at Sheherazade in 2018:

Keith Allyn Spencer is an artist from El Paso, Texas, whose work plays with the nature of painting and its potential for intervening in non-art contexts. His paintings are occasionally installed guerilla-style in banal environments such as Pizza Hut, Home Depot, and Walmart, encouraging a positive disruption of the everyday.

“Find the 2 and you will be kissed tomorrow. 55555...” is part of a series of Spencer’s painted car covers. These works recall the “low riders” that are indigenous to the artist’s hometown. At once extremely macho and wildly decorative, low rider cars display a hybridity that subverts the decorative-as-feminine stereotype, presenting a uniquely Mexican-American identity that challenges cultural norms. The car cover in this exhibition will invoke Sheherazade’s past as a one-car garage, by being draped over a car at night, and making occasional excursions outside of the Sheherazade’s walls during the day.

The work will be present in the gallery each night, but it is possible that the work may be outside of the garage on Magnolia Avenue, or even in other neighborhoods, streets, or parking lots around Louisville during daytime hours. You can follow the actions of the work on social media. If you see “Find the 2 and you will be kissed tomorrow. 55555…” out and about in Louisville, feel free to take a photo and post it online with the tag #findthe2.
